Kuzu was my number-one remedy when my girls were growing up, and it still is now that they are adults. I love it, too—in sickness or in health. Kuzu helps calm and soothe your baby, and it is a powerful remedy for diarrhea, stomachache, acid reflux, colds, cough, fever, and headache. Kuzu helps soothe emotions, eliminates toxins, reduces stress, and diminishes hyperactivity.

Kuzu is a root that comes from a plant similar to kudzu and grows wild along highways in the southern United States. This chalky white substance is native to and usually processed in Japan. Kuzu is alkaline-producing and very soothing to your baby’s digestive system. It can be used in daily cooking as a healthy alternative to arrowroot or cornstarch, to thicken sauces, creams, gravies, pies, puddings, or vegetable stir-fries.

Depending on your child’s condition and taste, you may choose to use kuzu with brown rice syrup and water, apple juice, or savory ingredients. [My daughters] Emi and Mari usually enjoyed the sweet recipes. Save the savory dish for when your child is over one year old.

You will need
  • 2 tablespoons kuzu
  • ½ cup cold water
  • ½ cup apple juice
  1. Dissolve the kuzu in the cold water.
  2. Place the apple juice in a small pan, and heat over medium heat.
  3. Add the dissolved kuzu and water mixture, and stir with a wooden spoon. Continue stirring until the liquid reaches a low simmer and becomes clear.
  4. Cool before serving.
  • For Brown Rice Syrup Kuzu, substitute ½ cup apple juice for ½ cup water, add 2 tablespoons brown rice syrup, and follow the recipe as directed.
